Electric blankets are electrical appliances that sit directly on the bed — which is why virtually every major market regulates them. As an importer or brand, understanding the certification landscape is the difference between a smooth retail launch and a shipment stuck in customs. This guide explains the common marks and what they actually cover.

Which mark applies where?

MarketKey marks / standardsWhat it covers
European UnionCE (LVD + EMC), RoHS, REACHElectrical safety (Low Voltage Directive), electromagnetic compatibility, restricted substances
Germany (optional)GSVoluntary third-party safety mark, widely trusted by retailers
US / CanadaUL / ETL listing, FCC Part 15NRTL safety listing for retail; EMC for electronic controllers
GCC / Middle EastG-Mark (GSO), 220–240 V variantsSafety and conformity for Gulf markets

What the tests actually check

While standards differ, the core test categories are similar:

  • Heating element safety — temperature rise limits, insulation of heating wires, short-circuit behavior.
  • Thermal protection — overheat protection and thermal fuses must operate correctly under fault conditions.
  • Mechanical robustness — folding, bending and flexing of the blanket and its wires in normal use.
  • Electrical safety — insulation resistance, leakage current, grounding (where applicable).
  • EMC — the controller must not cause harmful interference (FCC Part 15 / EU EMC directive).
  • Substances — restricted materials per RoHS and REACH requirements.

Common misunderstandings

  • "CE = certified" — CE is a self-declaration of conformity based on testing to harmonized standards. Retailers increasingly ask for test reports behind the CE mark, not just the logo.
  • "UL listing for China-made products" — UL/ETL listings are product-specific and factory-inspection based. Not every factory can offer them; confirm scope and certificate validity before ordering.
  • "One certificate covers every market" — voltage, plug type, language and standards differ. Design decisions (e.g., 120 V vs 240 V heating elements) are made per market.

Questions to ask your OEM supplier

  1. Which certifications or test reports do you currently hold for this product type?
  2. Which certification path applies to my destination market, and what is the realistic timeline and cost?
  3. Are the certificates issued for my brand/model, or only for an existing model?
  4. What changes to the design (voltage, controller, materials) would affect certification?
  5. Can you provide test reports and declarations with each batch?

How we work with certification

At Haiyue Shengda we plan certification before production: we confirm the applicable standards for your product and destination, align components and documentation, and prepare the paperwork for your import and retail requirements. Certification scope and cost depend on the product and market — see our Quality & Safety page, or ask us directly.
