Most heated product orders that go wrong do not go wrong because of the heating element. They go wrong because of a detail nobody wrote down: the wrong voltage, a plug that does not match the socket, a pad cut for a bed size the destination market does not use, or a cord too short for the room it was designed for. None of these are manufacturing failures — they are specification failures, and they are entirely preventable if they are settled before the order is placed rather than discovered on arrival.

1. Voltage and frequency come first

Voltage is the single specification that cannot be retrofitted after production. Mains voltage splits broadly into two groups: 100–120 V for North America and Japan, and 220–240 V for Europe, the Middle East and most of Asia, with frequency at 50 Hz or 60 Hz depending on the market. The trap is assuming that one build covers a region. A 220–240 V product sent to a 120 V market will underperform or fail outright, and a 120 V product sent to a 220 V market is a safety issue, not a performance one. If you sell into both, treat them as two separate products with their own part numbers, packaging and certification, not as one product with an adapter plug.

2. Plugs, cords and connection length

Plug type is the second fixed decision. Different markets use different pin configurations, and the correct plug is not simply an accessory — it is part of the approved product. Ordering a cord with the wrong plug and re-terminating locally is rarely acceptable to a retailer or a customs authority, and it invalidates the approval the product was tested under. Cord length matters more than most buyers expect: a heated mattress pad needs to reach an outlet from the head or foot of the bed in a real room, and a controller placed too far from the sleeper is a daily irritation. Specify the cord length from the actual use position, and confirm whether the controller detaches, because that changes both the cleaning instructions and the storage story you write on the box.

3. Bed sizes are not universal

Bed sizing is where heated bedding most often misses. A fitted mattress pad has to match the mattress it sits on, so the market's bed dimensions come before the product's dimensions. Our mattress pad range runs from twin at 99×190 cm up to king at 180×200 cm, with EU bed sizes available on request — and that last phrase is doing real work, because European bed sizes differ from the US sizes many buyers are used to. The same logic applies to blankets and throws: a size that reads as generous in one market can read as undersized in another. If your channel spans several countries, settle the size matrix per market in the sampling stage, when changes are still free.

4. Certification follows the market, not the product

Certification is market-specific, which is why it belongs in the same conversation as voltage and plugs. CE, FCC, RoHS and REACH cover the large majority of export destinations, with UL/ETL or GS where the market or the retailer requires it. These routes are supportable on production orders, and the correct one for your specific product, voltage and connector should be confirmed at quotation rather than assumed from a previous project. Because the approval is tied to the build you ship, changing the voltage, the plug or the controller after certification is not a small amendment — plan those decisions before testing, not after.

5. Labelling and packaging implications

Once the technical specification is fixed, the packaging has to carry it. Voltage and frequency markings, the correct plug illustration, care and washing instructions, and any market-specific language requirements all follow from decisions made earlier in the project. Getting the retail layer right at the same time as the product specification avoids the worst outcome in this category: a container of correctly built products in packaging that fails a retailer's compliance check.

6. Pre-order checklist by market

  • Voltage and frequency — 100–120 V or 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz per market
  • Plug type and pin configuration, matched to the destination socket
  • Cord length measured from the real use position, with controller position confirmed
  • Bed or product dimensions per market, with EU bed sizes on request where needed
  • Certification route — CE, FCC, RoHS, REACH; UL/ETL or GS per destination
  • Overheat protection, auto shut-off and detachable controller as standard
  • Packaging language, voltage marking, care label and MOQ confirmed at quotation
